Background

     The Applied Taxonomic Research Center (ATRC) was approved to be a specialized research center of Khon Kaen University (KKU) on 14 March 2002 and its administrative committee was appointed on 17 June 2002. The ATRC was initially established by a group of researchers specializing in biodiversity. At present (2015), there are 37 researchers affiliated with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Microbiology in the Faculty of Science and Plant Pathology in the Faculty of Agriculture. There are 2 full-time assistant researchers in the center. In addition, 65 Ph.D. and 124 M.Sc. students are conducting their studies under supervision of the center’s staff.        Situated in Indochina, Thailand’s tropical forests supply a rich diversity of biological resources. Approximately 20,000 species of plants and 87,500 species of animals are estimated to occur in Thailand. However, to date only 8,000 species of plants and 18,000 species of animals have been identified. The northeast of Thailand covers one third of the country’s area, and is a ideal location to establish a research center focusing on diverse aspects of biodiversity. The aim of the center is to conduct basic and applied taxonomic research leading to conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Goal & Mission

          The Applied Taxonomic Research Center is not only a center for taxonomic research and study, but also a provider of services to the public through, its expertise in taxonomy of local plants and fungi. Current research topics include medicinal herbs, pollen causing allergy in humans, DNA fingerprinting and chromosome studies for agricultural purposes, and utilization of plankton, aquatic insects and algae as bioindicators for environmental assessment.

Taxonomy for environmental assessment: Study of diversity of zooplankton, aquatic insects and algae to be used as bioindicators in Thailand.

Taxonomy for medical purposes: Identification of pollen and spores causing allergy in humans. Establishing databases of pollen, plant and fungal spores

Taxonomy for agricultural purposes: Study of diversity and phytochemicals of medicinal plants in Thailand including the usage of some natural mushrooms for medical purposes, study of the increased efficiency of algae for commercial culture.
