• Measurement and modeling of pollutant and nutrient concentrations in rivers and lakes.
• Development of new methods for restoring anthropogenically eutrophic (nutrient rich) surface waters.
• Study of interactions between biology and chemistry on the cycling and availability of nutrients in sediment and water of lakes and rivers.

Dr. Huser completed his PhD in Water Resources Science from the University of Minnesota in 2005. With 10 years of experience as a limnologist and engineer in the United States, Dr. Huser accepted a position at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden starting in 2010. In his time at SLU, Brian has conducted research on nutrients and lake restoration across Europe. He has published articles in several top environmental engineering journals, including Science of the Total Environment, Water Research, Hydrobiologia, Environmental Science & Technology, and many more. Brian’s research is thoroughly rooted in practical application, and he regularly serves as an engineer and consultant for major environmental projects across the European Union. Dr. Huser is arguably the world’s leading expert in using aluminum for the purpose of inactivating phosphorus in lake sediment. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Brian J. Huser was a visiting professor at Khon Kaen University from February 19 to March 18, 2019 (2562). During his month in Khon Kaen, Brian conducted seminars, taught lectures, and helped direct several field activities. With the support of then-Dean Asst. Prof. Dr. Somsak Pitaksanurat, a seminar was held at the Faculty of Public Health that brought together officials from several local governments, including Ban Ped and Khon Kaen Municipalities, to learn about lake eutrophication and ways to improve water quality. Brian provided valuable knowledge to these local officials. On February 27, 2019, Dr. Huser helped oversee the first time in Thailand that a wide-scale application of aluminum sulfate was used to control phosphorus loading in a eutrophic lake. In partnership with Ban Ped Municipality and with funding from the Faculty of Public Health, 2,300 kg of aluminum sulfate was added to Beung Gii Lake in Ban Ped Municipality, Khon Kaen Province. Dr. Huser also facilitated the development of laboratory techniques to measure the various chemical forms of phosphorus in lake sediment, which had never been performed in Thailand before. The Faculty of Public Health at Khon Kaen University remains the only laboratory in Thailand that can complete sequential extraction of inorganic phosphorus in lake sediment. As a result of the Visiting Scholarship from KKU, Brian has collaborated with researchers at Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Public Health. In 2020 and 2021, the team that included Asst. Prof. Dr. Anootnara T. Kuster and Anthony C. Kuster, both faculty at KKU’s Public Health, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Brian J. Huser, published research articles in the Journal of Environmental Management and Water. In addition, Dr. Huser is serving as an external advisor for Anthony C. Kuster’s Doctor of Public Health (Dr.PH) degree program at KKU’s Faculty of Public Health, for which Dr. Rittirong Junggoth and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surapol Padungthon are the co-advisors. Brian continues to collaborate with researchers at the Faculty of Public Health and Faculty of Engineering as part of the Khon Kaen University’s Research Program grant, which was awarded in 2020 to the team where Asst. Prof. Dr. Anootnara T. Kuster is the PI. That research aims to develop drinking water treatment residual into various products that can be used to address excessive nutrient loading in eutrophic lakes and achieve lake restoration.
